Are You Planning on a Vacation This Holiday Season?

A Personal Insurance Update

Many of us are planning a trip this holiday. It might be to get some sun or a trip to visit relatives. Whatever that case, there are some things you can do to reduce the likelihood of a home invasion while you are away. According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) over 430,000 burglaries take place during the holiday season. A burglary takes place about every 30 seconds in the United States. That adds up to over 200 per hour, and over 4,700 every day.

Criminals watch your home and know when your home is vacant or when you are on vacation. Here are some things you can to do help protect your property while away:

  • Stop the paper and garbage.

  • Keep valuables in a locked safe.

  • Make sure all electrical appliances are turned off.

  • Lock up all guns.

  • Tell neighbors about your trip. Have them watch for deliveries.

  • Do not take all your credit cards on vacation, only take the ones you may need.

  • Use automatic lights to give the appearance of someone being at home.

  • Pay all your bills so that key utilities don’t get turned off.

  • Inform your credit card companies where you plan on traveling. This information will alert them to any fraud.

  • Mow the lawn before you go to make it look like you are at home.

  • Give your itinerary to a family member.

  • Do not post vacation pictures on social media sites until your return home.

  • Have us complete a free home insurance review before you go.
